Anti-ageing cream or youthful radiance cream – It comes in a small pretty jar. All you need is a tiny pea-sized amount. It promises to banish all your lines and wrinkles in a matter of days or weeks. Some of the promises that are typically made by cosmetic companies are – “Our cream smoothes fine lines, reduce pigmentation and sagging, strengthens elasticity of the skin, boosts skin radiance with results visible in 30 days or 12 weeks! Sounds promising?
Anti-ageing and wrinkle creams may be expensive, unnatural and may not be scientifically proven. Long term use of these creams may be detrimental.
Most anti-ageing creams cite that they are clinically proven and tested.
Is it true?
“The cosmetic manufacturers are not bothered to tell us whether a sufficient number of participants were involved. If people were involved, how many participants were there? Most studies involve 30 to 80 volunteers, of whom “67% reported firmer skin” after a few applications. We never know who conducted the study – the company itself or a laboratory, or whether this laboratory was founded by the company to substantiate their claims such as “makes you look ten years younger.” Such claims look impressive in press releases and ads, but are never published in scientific journals and validated by the scientific community. “[From the book: The green beauty guide by Julie Gabriel]
Is it possible to help your skin look radiant and youthful naturally?
Skin looks radiant and youthful when they are supple and moist. Moist and supple skin resists forming of lines. The skin that is supplied with lot of anti-oxidants (anti-oxidants help in protecting the skin from cell damage caused by “free radicals”) is much healthier and firmer. Maintaining healthy lifestyle (sans smoking), healthy diet, drinking lots of water and minimizing exposure to direct sunlight help the skin to stay youthful.
Natural ingredients that can help our skin to look youthful are available plenty in nature.
Grapes particularly the purple, black and red varieties are high in Resveratrol. Grapes are also a good source of Vitamin C and anti-oxidants and assist the repair of collagen.
In nature, resveratrol functions as part of a plant’s defensive arsenal. Resveratrol is an antimicrobial substance produced by plants in response to stress, infection, or strong UV radiation. In recent years, resveratrol in particular has become the subject of intense interest due to its powerful antioxidant and anti-aging properties.

Manuka honey is one of nature’s gifts with its acclaimed high antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Manuka honey is made by bees that gather the nectar from the scented flowers of the Manuka tree, a New Zealand native tree that blooms in summer.
In 1981, Dr Molan (Dr. Peter Molan, professor of Biochemistry at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand) confirmed that some Manuka honey samples had more antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic qualities than others. This is known as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). The higher the UMF, the more potent its properties are. UMF manuka honey may be applied to the skin surface and may support the body’s natural healing of minor wounds, minor scratches and scars. It is highly moisturizing for the dry skin and helpful for oily and acne prone skin. It can improve the texture and tone of the skin with regular use.
Aloe Vera gel:
Aloe Vera needs no special mention. It has anti-inflammatory, healing and soothing properties that are beneficial to all skin types.
Lemon juice helps to reduce blemishes on your skin. Regular use of lemon juice will reduce the scars and black spots.
Combining all the above ingredients, it is possible to make a very simple anti ageing massage elixir. Massage this elixir two or three times a week and leave it on to dry naturally before washing it off with warm water. You will notice that the elasticity of your skin has improved exuding a subtle glow and shine.
How to make the anti ageing massage elixir:
- Mash up 4 to 5 red grapes including the skin and seed (if any) with the help of mortar and pestle. Make it into a paste.
- Add a tablespoon of manuka honey to the paste. Manuka honey is usually thicker than normal honey. Mix them well.
- Add a teaspoon of Aloe Vera gel to it and few drops of lemon juice (optional) and cinnamon powder (optional). Cinnamon powder may assist in blood circulation as it is a warming stimulant. It can irritate sensitive skin. Use not more than half a teaspoon when adding to the mixture.
- Mix everything well and with your clean finger tips apply the mixture all over your face in circular motion.
- Massage your facial skin for three to five minutes concentrating on those fine lines and spots. You can gently apply this mixture under your eye area if not using lemon juice and cinnamon powder as lemon juice and cinnamon powder may sting and irritate your eyes.
- Leave it on to dry naturally. It should take about 30 to 40 minutes to dry. Carry on with your normal tasks at home .Wash it off with warm water and pat your skin dry to reveal a naturally glowing and youthful skin.
- Repeat this massage treatment two or maximum three times a week.
Manuka honey is available in most of the health or organic stores in Australia and New Zealand. Not all Manuka honey is effective in treating minor scars. Choose one with UMF rating + 8 and above.
Also watch out for fake manuka honey available in the market. Do your research before spending your money on manuka honey. It can be quiet expensive. Some of the trusted brands in Manuka honey are Comvita, Sweet Meadow, NZ, and Bee products active, NZ etc. Look for UMF rating. Higher the rating, better it is.
